Energy efficiency in a channel model for the spiking axon
نویسندگان
چکیده
We examine the spiking axon as a communication channel. We develop a .rst principles channel model that encompasses the noise in the axon, which manifests itself as spike jitter, and the power consumption, which arises from the activity of the Na–K pump. This model enables us to examine the trade-o4 between the information rate and power consumption. Using parameters from the frog myelinated axon, we determine the spike rate that corresponds to the maximum energy e ciency. This spike rate is consistent with experimental observations, which suggests that neural communication may have developed to maximize energy e ciency rather than information rate alone. c © 2002 Elsevier Science B.V. Complementary Tuning of Na+ and K+ Channel Gating Underlies Fast and Energy-Efficient Action Potentials in GABAergic Interneuron Axons
Fast-spiking, parvalbumin-expressing GABAergic interneurons (PV+-BCs) express a complex machinery of rapid signaling mechanisms, including specialized voltage-gated ion channels to generate brief action potentials (APs). However, short APs are associated with overlapping Na+ and K+ fluxes and are therefore energetically expensive. How the potentially vicious combination of high AP frequency and...
متن کاملMetabolic efficiency with fast spiking in the squid axon
Fundamentally, action potentials in the squid axon are consequence of the entrance of sodium ions during the depolarization of the rising phase of the spike mediated by the outflow of potassium ions during the hyperpolarization of the falling phase. Perfect metabolic efficiency with a minimum charge needed for the change in voltage during the action potential would confine sodium entry to the r...
متن کاملIon Channel Density Regulates Switches between Regular and Fast Spiking in Soma but Not in Axons
The threshold firing frequency of a neuron is a characterizing feature of its dynamical behaviour, in turn determining its role in the oscillatory activity of the brain. Two main types of dynamics have been identified in brain neurons. Type 1 dynamics (regular spiking) shows a continuous relationship between frequency and stimulation current (f-I(stim)) and, thus, an arbitrarily low frequency a...
متن کاملEnergy and Exergy Evaluation of Multi-channel Photovoltaic/Thermal Hybrid System: Simulation and Experiment
In this research, a pilot study and analysis of an innovative multi-channel photovoltaic/thermal (MCPV/T) system in a geographic location (35° 44' 35'' N, 50° 57' 25'' E) has been carried out. This system consists of integrating a photovoltaic panel and two PV/T heat-sink converters. The total electrical, exergy and energy efficiencies of the system at air flow rate of 0.005 kg/s and radiation ...
متن کاملComputing loss of efficiency in optimal Bayesian decoders given noisy or incomplete spike trains.
We investigate Bayesian methods for optimal decoding of noisy or incompletely-observed spike trains. Information about neural identity or temporal resolution may be lost during spike detection and sorting, or spike times measured near the soma may be corrupted with noise due to stochastic membrane channel effects in the axon. We focus on neural encoding models in which the (discrete) neural sta...
